Laboratory

The Laboratoire Parole et Langage (Speech and Language Lab or LPL) is a "mixed" research unit (UMR) which means that it is affiliated with both CNRS (National Research Council) and Aix-Marseille University.

The lab hosts a large (80+) team of phoneticians, linguists, computer scientists, psychologists, neuroscientist, physicists and physicians. This interdisciplinary team studies the mechanisms involved in speech and language production, perception and understanding through a wide range of methodologies, centered around empirical approaches grounded on experimental and corpus data.

The lab is a founding member of the Institute Language Communication and the Brain (ILCB).

The lab features an experimental platform (CEP) that allows lab members but also external researchers to access an interesting set of instruments for measuring speech and language related variables. More specifically the platform includes a team of engineers and technicians holding expertise on measuring voice and acoustic parameters, but also articulatory, physiological, neuro-physiological and behavioral variables and finally a solid experience in recording audio-video corpora in various interactional situations.

The lab also hosts a documentation center focused on (i) speech and language sciences and (ii) Creole studies. In parallel to these bibliographic assets, the lab is in charge of editing two journals : Interdisciplary Studies on Speech and Language (TIPA) and Etudes Créoles (Creole Studies).
